Sung Side Plate · Black Clay Small Plate
Designed for the in-between moments of a meal, the Sung Side Plate brings calm intention to the table. Neither large nor ornamental, its softly rounded form is made for bread, fruit, desserts, or small accompaniments.
Handcrafted in the forested Sung Valley of Meghalaya, each plate is shaped by women artisans using homegrown wheels and handmade tools. The region’s distinctive black clay is carefully formed and burnished with smooth serpentine stone, resulting in a surface rich with natural depth, and subtle markings left by fire and hand.
Born entirely of human hands, every plate carries quiet irregularities that make it singular. This living craft tradition was formally recognized in 2024 with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag—Meghalaya Lyrnai Pottery (No. 1095), affirming its cultural and artisanal significance.
Simple, grounding, and endlessly useful, the Sung Side Plate is an everyday object designed to age beautifully with use.
