The brass cow on the shelf started as a handful of broken utensils. Between the scrap and the cow sit several days of work — and most of it has nothing to do with metal.
In Kondagaon, in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, the Ghadwa community melts old metal — copper, zinc, a little tin — into bell metal, the warm gold-brown of a finished piece. Their name comes from ghalna, to melt. A local story says a Bastar king, handed a Dhokra necklace made for his wife, was taken enough with it to give the makers the title. The name stuck. The melting, though, is the last step and the quickest. Everything before it is done by hand.

How a Dhokra piece is made
It begins in mud. A core is shaped from clay and rice husk, a little smaller than the final figure, and left in the sun until it hardens. Meanwhile the beeswax is melted, strained clean, and mixed with tree resin, then pushed through a small press that draws it into threads — thick or fine, depending on which way the maker wants the surface to read.
Then the slow part. Those wax threads are wound around the clay core by hand, strand over strand, until the whole shape is covered. The spirals and zigzags on a finished Dhokra piece aren't cut into the metal afterward; they're laid down now, in wax, one thread at a time. The winding itself is borrowed from basket-weaving — Bastar weavers once coiled grass around rope, and the same motion carried over into metal. It's slow because it has to be: the proportions, the mix, the pressure of the hand are all things you learn by doing, passed down young, held in the fingers rather than written anywhere.
The design is finished before the metal arrives.

The wax form is packed in more clay, with narrow channels left open at the edges, and set into a furnace dug into the ground and ringed with brick. The heat does two jobs at once. The wax melts and drains out through the channels, leaving a hollow in the exact shape of the design. And the scrap metal, molten in the same fire, runs down into that empty space.
This is where it can fail. If the metal misses a channel or cools too soon, it won't fill the figure, and the days behind it are gone. There's no patching a half-cast piece. You break it down and start over.

Why no two are alike
If it holds, you take a hammer to the mold to free the piece. The clay falls away in shards and can't be used again, which means the figure inside it can never be made a second time. The same hands make lamps this way, and measuring bowls, and Nandi bulls, and anklets thin as wire — each one the only one of itself. The Dancing Girl pulled from Mohenjo-daro, cast this same way 4,500 years ago, was also one of a kind.
The pots are gone, the wax is gone, the mold is in pieces on the floor. What's left is the cow.
