A handcrafted serving tray with woven cane handle detail, made from a blend of serpentinite stone and brown clay — the material combination that defines Longpi pottery. The finish is a deep metallic black that comes from the stone itself and the firing process, not from glaze. At 10.6 inches square, it's sized for sharing — appetizers, fruit, a centerpiece, or anything that earns a moment at the table.

Longpi pottery is made by the Tangkhul tribe in the village of Longpi Khullen in the hills of Manipur, northeast India — a tradition dating back to the Neolithic period, roughly 10,000 BC. There is no potter's wheel. Every piece is shaped entirely by hand using a paste of powdered serpentinite stone ("leshonlung" in the local language) mixed with brown clay collected during the dry months. The exact proportions are knowledge passed down through generations of Tangkhul artisans and not written anywhere.

Each piece is one-of-a-kind, with subtle variations and natural imperfections that celebrate the artisan's touch.

STORY

Longpi pottery is made by the Tangkhul tribe in the village of Longpi Khullen in the hills of Manipur, northeast India. The tradition dates back to the Neolithic period, roughly 10,000 BC, and has been practiced without a potter's wheel the entire time. Every piece is hand-molded using a paste of powdered serpentinite stone — called "leshonlung" in the local language — mixed with brown clay collected during the dry months. The stone gives Longpi its distinctive metallic black finish, which comes from the material itself and the firing process, not from glaze. The exact proportions of stone to clay vary by the object being made and are knowledge passed down through generations of Tangkhul artisans. WILLAGE carries this collection because Longpi is exactly what we exist to elevate — indigenous craft with a direct, unbroken line to the people who make it.
