Longpi Square Dinner Plate — Black Pottery
A square dinner plate made from a paste of powdered serpentinite stone and brown clay — the material combination that defines Longpi pottery. The finish is a deep metallic black that comes from the stone itself, not from glaze, with a subtle shimmer that catches light. At nearly 10 inches across and roughly an inch tall, it's a proper dinner plate — use it for full meals, or as a charger under smaller pieces.
Longpi pottery is made by the Tangkhul tribe in the village of Longpi Khullen in the hills of Manipur, northeast India — a tradition dating back to the Neolithic period, roughly 10,000 BC. There is no potter's wheel. Every piece is hand-molded from a paste of serpentinite stone ("leshonlung" in the local language) mixed with brown clay collected during the dry months. Unlike most unglazed pottery, Longpi is fully dishwasher safe — the stone content makes it remarkably durable.
