Carved by hand in the village of Pahambir, The Listening String is a living instrument—shaped as much by listening as by craft.

Made by master artisan Rani Maring, a keeper of ancient Khasi traditions, each piece begins as fallen wood or bamboo gathered from the forests of Ri-Bhoi. These materials are never harvested with force; they are received as gifts from the land, then patiently carved, hollowed, and tuned by hand.

For decades, students, scholars, and neighbours have sought Rani Maring out—drawn by his deep understanding of Khasi cosmology, symbolism, and the unseen rhythms that shape daily life. His instruments are not rushed into form. He listens closely to the wood, shaping and tuning it until it carries not just a note, but a presence.

Music flows naturally from his hands. Whether carving or playing, Rani tunes each instrument until it holds what his community recognises as soul—a resonance that connects sound to memory, forest to hand, and maker to listener.

Both playable and ceremonial, The Listening String is an act of preservation. Of sound. Of knowledge. Of a cultural heartbeat that continues to live through craft.
