The Little Sausage — Lampworked Glass Dachshund

Regular price $20.00
Shipping calculated at checkout.

A glass dachshund small enough to sit on a quarter. Glossy black body, burnt orange legs, floppy red-orange ears, and two wide-set eyes that give it a look of permanent, slightly startled sincerity. It's the kind of thing you put on your desk and then spend the rest of the afternoon glancing at instead of working.

Lampworked by hand in L'viv, Ukraine, by artisans at Glass by Iness — a family studio that's been making glass figurines for over 25 years. Each figure is shaped under a 900°+ flame using hand tools to stretch, fuse, and pinch solid colored glass rods into form. At this scale, the work is essentially miniature sculpture — the ears, the legs, the tiny tail are each placed individually while the glass is still molten. Made from solid glass, not hollow, which is why something this small still has real weight in your hand.

STORY

Made by artisans at Glass by Iness, a family studio in L'viv, Ukraine, that has been making glass figurines for over 25 years. The family left Ukraine in the late 1980s — some to America, some to Germany — and one uncle purchased a well-known European vase manufacturer and began producing smaller glass pieces. What started with candle holders and Christmas ornaments grew into one of the largest lampworked glass studios in Europe. Each piece is shaped under a 900°+ flame using hand tools to stretch, fuse, and pinch solid colored glass rods into form. Every artisan completes technical school, apprentices for several years with master glassblowers, and is only then trusted to make finished work. Everything — including the glass itself — is made by hand in L'viv.

Care Instructions

Dust with a soft dry cloth. Handle with care — solid glass but breakable on impact. Extremely small — keep away from edges and out of reach of young children.
