The Long Voice is an instrument shaped for endurance — of sound, of memory, of tradition.

Hand-carved by Rani Maring in the village of Pahambir, this Khasi folk lute is made from natural wood and finished with a stretched skin soundboard, following practices passed through listening rather than notation. Each piece begins with fallen material gathered respectfully from the forests of Ri-Bhoi... wood treated not as resource, but as inheritance.

Rani Maring is a keeper of ancient Khasi traditions. For decades, students, scholars, and neighbours have sought him out — drawn by his deep understanding of sound, symbolism, and the unseen rhythms of Khasi life. When he makes an instrument, he does not follow measurements. He listens. He shapes. He tunes. He listens again.

The elongated neck and hollowed body allow sound to travel slowly, carrying texture rather than volume. This is not an instrument made for performance halls. It is made for accompaniment, for storytelling, for solitary listening. It is made for sound as presence rather than display.

Each lute holds what Rani’s community recognises as soul, a resonance that cannot be replicated, only encountered. Variations in tone, surface, and proportion are not imperfections; they are signatures of authorship and listening.

Offered as both a playable instrument and a cultural artifact, The Long Voice is a continuation of a living tradition, shaped by hand, guided by ear, and sustained through practice.

STORY

Hand-carved by Rani Maring in the village of Pahambir, Meghalaya. Rani is a keeper of ancient Khasi traditions — he makes instruments by listening rather than measuring, following practices passed through generations. Each lute begins with fallen material gathered from the forests of Ri-Bhoi, treated not as resource but as inheritance. The elongated neck and hollowed body carry sound slowly, with texture rather than volume. This is not a performance instrument — it is a cultural artifact that happens to be playable.

Care Instructions

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep away from moisture, extreme heat, and direct sunlight. The skin soundboard is sensitive to humidity — store in a stable, dry environment.
