The Music Boat — Bastar Wrought Iron Sculpture
A long, narrow boat carrying a troupe of musicians — each figure playing a different instrument, standing upright along the hull, with an antelope figurehead at the prow. The whole piece is hand-forged from wrought iron by artisans in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, shaped one strike at a time. At 10 inches long and 500 grams, it sits on a shelf or mantel with real presence.
Bastar ironwork is one of India's protected craft traditions, registered under the Geographical Indication (GI) system — meaning the craft, the region, and the people making it are formally recognized as irreplaceable. The boat is a recurring motif in Bastar storytelling, representing the journey of life; the musicians represent the role of music through every season and gathering. Each figure is forged separately and joined by hand, which is why no two boats are ever identical.
