The Poppy — Red Bolga Sculpture Basket

Regular price $625.00
Shipping calculated at checkout.

Deep red elephant grass, woven row on row and then turned. The basket lifts into a high, curling crest on one side and folds low on the other, so it reads like a poppy just opening or a ribbon caught in a breeze. The weave is fine and even, and the surface holds a soft, matte texture that catches light along every twist. Set it low where you can look into it: on a bench, a sideboard, or the floor by a chair.

Bolga baskets have carried grain, seed and household goods in Ghana’s Upper East Region for generations. In Nanasei Agyemang’s hands, and those of the Bolgatanga weavers he trains, the same grass is softened in water and bent into forms that sit somewhere between vessel and sculpture. No two are alike, and this is the only one.

STORY

From Nanasei Agyemang, a Ghanaian artist and master weaver who returned to his roots in Ghana’s Upper East Region after studying in Arizona and living in Denver, Colorado. Working with artisans in Bolgatanga, Nanasei is leading a new generation of Bolga weaving. His baskets are softened in water and shaped by hand into organic forms that feel as much like sculpture as vessel. Every piece creates work for local artisans and carries a generations-old tradition into a new sculptural language. No two are ever the same.
