The Sunfold — Yellow Bolga Sculpture Basket
A basket that won’t sit still. Woven from elephant grass dyed a deep, sunlit yellow, it twists and folds back on itself like a petal opening, or fabric caught mid-turn. The grass is softened in water and bent by hand, row on row, so the whole form carries the motion of the weaving. Look closely and you can follow every coil. Set on a console, a stair landing or the floor, it holds a room the way a sculpture does. It also still works as a vessel for throws, magazines or nothing at all.
Bolga baskets have been woven in Ghana’s Upper East Region for generations, as sifters, storage, and everyday carriers. Nanasei Agyemang and the Bolgatanga artisans he trains take that tradition somewhere new: oversized, organic forms that blur the line between basket and art. No two are alike, and this is the only one. For the collector, the new home that needs a single brave color, or anyone who wants to live with something unmistakably made by hand.
