The Water Bearer — A Dhokra Reverie
The Water Bearer is a sculptural expression of care, continuity, and quiet strength—cast in metal using the ancient Dhokra (lost-wax) technique that has endured since the Indus Valley civilisation. Elongated, poised, and intentionally minimal, the figure captures a woman mid-gesture: one vessel balanced above, another held close an archetype of nurture, balance, and provision found across cultures.
Handcrafted by Rahul Dey, an artist in India’s contemporary craft movement, this piece bridges ancestral knowledge with a modern, eco-conscious sensibility. Every line bears the subtle irregularities of the cire perdue process each mold broken after casting, ensuring no two pieces are ever alike.
Finished in a warm, aged brass tone, The Water Bearer sits comfortably in global interiors: from a sun-washed California home to a quiet European apartment or a contemplative retreat space. It is not décor in the conventional sense, but a presence grounded, spiritual, and enduring.
