Urban Jungle Storytile — Hand-Baked Ceramic by Marga van Oers
A small ceramic tile — 10 × 10 cm — depicting a balcony overflowing with plants, a personal jungle built in a few square feet of a city building. The illustration uses selective color so the green of the foliage pops against the muted sketch of the facade, which turns the whole scene into a quiet celebration of people who make space for nature where there isn't any.
Storytiles are made by Marga van Oers, a Dutch artist who got her start with a box of centuries-old Delftware tiles her grandmother gave her while she was studying at the Amsterdam School of Arts. Those antique tiles — cracked, storied, full of history — became the starting point for her own narrative work. Each Storytile is a miniature world: part illustration, part ceramic, part record of a small moment.
Every tile is hand-baked in the Netherlands using a traditional method. A smooth clay "butter" is poured and then fired three separate times at up to 1,250°C, which permanently fuses the illustration and glossy glaze into the tile itself — meaning the artwork is part of the ceramic, not printed on top of it. The result is fully resistant to heat, water, and cold. Hang it, lean it on a shelf, or build a small grid with other Storytiles on a wall.
