Taking My Time Storytile — Hand-Baked Ceramic by Marga van Oers

Regular price $45.00
Shipping calculated at checkout.

A ceramic tile depicting a reader perched on top of a tall, wobbly stack of newspapers, drinking coffee on what appears to be a vintage sofa. It's surreal, slightly absurd, and exactly the right joke about modern life — a small ode to the people who refuse to rush through the news and would rather enjoy the cup in their hand. The illustration uses selective color and a light sketched background so the scene reads like a single, specific moment in time.

Storytiles are made by Marga van Oers, a Dutch artist who began her work with a box of centuries-old Delftware tiles her grandmother gave her while she was studying at the Amsterdam School of Arts. Each tile is a miniature world — part illustration, part ceramic, part record of a small moment. Every piece is hand-baked in the Netherlands using a traditional three-stage firing process that permanently fuses the artwork and glaze into the tile itself.

Hang it on a wall, lean it on a shelf, or group it with other Storytiles to build a small gallery. Suited to kitchens, reading corners, home offices, or anywhere that needs a small piece of wit.

STORY

Storytiles are made by Marga van Oers, a Dutch artist who began her work with a box of centuries-old Delftware tiles gifted to her by her grandmother while she was studying at the Amsterdam School of Arts. Those antique tiles — with their cracks, patina, and embedded history — became the canvas for her own narrative art. Each Storytile is a miniature world blending illustration, ceramic craft, and personal storytelling. Marga's most poignant piece, the "Forever" tile, was born from the loss of her mother and depicts a bird looking at a golden star — a design that holds specific meaning for her while offering universal comfort. She now works from a farmhouse studio in the Netherlands, balancing her growing practice with family life. Each tile is hand-baked using a traditional method: a smooth clay "butter" is poured, then fired three times at temperatures up to 1,250°C, permanently fusing the illustration and glaze into the ceramic itself. The result is a piece of art that is literally part of the ceramic, not printed on top of it — fully resistant to heat, water, and cold.
