Tea Leaf Cane Basket — Handwoven, Assam India

Regular price $95.00
Shipping calculated at checkout.

A handwoven cane and bamboo basket from Assam, India — the same form used for generations by tea harvesters in the region's green-terraced plantations. Carried on the back during plucking, the shape is wide at the mouth and tapered at the base, made to hold the day's leaves and rest upright on the ground between rows. In a home, the same form works beautifully as a plant stand, a floor basket for throws or magazines, a laundry catch, or a sculptural object in its own right.

Each basket is woven by hand from natural cane and bamboo — no nails, no adhesives, no synthetic reinforcements. The pattern, the tension, and the finish are all set by the weaver's hand, which means each basket carries small variations in weave density and tone that are part of its character.

STORY

From the green-terraced plantations of Assam in northeastern India — the region that produces some of the world's most storied black tea. This basket form is a working object with a long history: carried on the back during plucking, its wide mouth catches the leaves as the harvester moves down the rows, and its tapered base lets it rest upright on the ground at the end of the day.

Each basket is handwoven from natural cane and bamboo, harvested and prepared locally. The technique is passed down through generations of Assamese weavers — no nails, no adhesives, no mechanization. Bringing one into a home is a way of carrying a small piece of that tradition forward, and of supporting the artisan hands that keep it alive.

Care Instructions

Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and harsh cleaners, which can weaken natural fibers. Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and humidity to preserve the cane and bamboo. If used as a plant basket, insert a waterproof liner between the pot and the weave.
