A bichon frise, small enough to stand in the crook of two fingers, cast in solid brass with every curl of the coat picked out — the pom of the tail, the soft fall of the ears, the round bearded muzzle. The antique patina darkens into the fleece so the curls read as texture rather than pattern, and the four short legs plant it squarely on any surface. It is barely two inches tall and heavier than it looks.

The bichon has no working history at all: no herding, no hunting, no guarding. It was bred for one thing only — to be good company.
