The Lanky Apes — Lampworked Glass Monkey Trio

Regular price $110.00
Shipping calculated at checkout.

Three glass monkeys sitting in a row — same pose, same wide blue eyes, same flat black ears, same impossibly long arms looping out like they're mid-shrug. The difference is in the details: one has orange lips, one has red, one has lavender-tinted arms. They look like they're in the middle of a conversation none of them is winning.

Each one is lampworked by hand in L'viv, Ukraine, by artisans at Glass by Iness — a family studio that's been making glass figurines for over 25 years. The bodies are warm amber glass, and the arms are pulled while the glass is still hot — one smooth stretch that hardens into a sweeping curve. Made from solid glass rods, not hollow, which is why they sit heavier than they look. Because every piece is shaped individually under a 900°+ flame, no two trios are ever perfectly identical — the arm curves, the lip shapes, the tilt of the ears all shift slightly from set to set.

STORY

Made by artisans at Glass by Iness, a family studio in L'viv, Ukraine, that has been making glass figurines for over 25 years. The family left Ukraine in the late 1980s — some to America, some to Germany — and one uncle purchased a well-known European vase manufacturer and began producing smaller glass pieces. What started with candle holders and Christmas ornaments grew into one of the largest lampworked glass studios in Europe. Each piece is shaped under a 900°+ flame using hand tools to stretch, fuse, and pinch solid colored glass rods into form. Every artisan completes technical school, apprentices for several years with master glassblowers, and is only then trusted to make finished work. Everything — including the glass itself — is made by hand in L'viv.

Care Instructions

Dust with a soft dry cloth. Handle with care — the extended arms are delicate. Keep away from edges and high-traffic surfaces.
