The Red Thread — Stoneware Plate

A shallow, wheel-thrown plate with an edge left deliberately unfinished — torn, scalloped, still showing the throw. The outside is bare stoneware, sandy and porous and slightly rough under the thumb; the inside is glazed smooth, so food sits on a surface that's easy to live with. Across the whole face runs a single red line, straight and unhurried. It has real weight for its size — 400 g of high-fired clay — and no two are the same. The thread lands differently on every piece.

We call it the red thread because that's what a line like this does: it runs from one edge to the other and ties the two sides together. Made in Turkey by UNIKA, the studio of ceramicist Ece Bozkurt, whose whole method is an argument for leaving the material alone — most pieces left unglazed outside so the raw character of the clay can be felt in the hand. For the host who believes the plate is part of the cooking, for a new marriage or a new home, and for anyone who'd rather own six different things than six identical ones.

STORY

UNIKA is the studio of Turkish ceramicist Ece Bozkurt, and its whole method is an argument for leaving the material alone. Each piece is shaped by hand on the wheel in high-fired stoneware, then left unglazed on the outside so the clay's own texture stays visible and reachable; only the inside is glazed, for comfort and use. The edges are torn rather than trimmed. The red line — the studio's signature — crosses each piece a little differently, which is why we call it the thread. The result sits between function and sculpture: simple, balanced forms made to be lived with rather than looked after.

Care Instructions

Food safe and dishwasher safe, though hand-washing will keep it beautiful longer. Wash in warm water with a mild soap and dry fully — the unglazed exterior is porous and will darken and soften in tone with use. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
